Converting an old glass conservatory roof

At Quay Construction & Glazing, we love turning challenging projects into remarkable transformations. We recently worked on a project in Otterton which involved converting an old conservatory into a usable extension of the home.

The existing glass conservatory suffered from temperate extremes, making it uncomfortable for year-round use. In the winter it was cold and leaked, and in the summer it was too hot.

This project is also located within a conservation area which created other challenges and factors to bear in mind when working on this project. This included carefully sourcing materials for the project to meet regulations.

Climate Control

Addressing the temperature issues, we replaced the old glass conservatory roof with a specially sourced Spanish slate tile roof. The roof was felt and insulated to negate the previously experienced temperature variation, making the space usable all year round. We also installed conservation roof lights at the front and rear to maintain natural light.

Interior Transformation

Internally, we insulated, boarded, and skimmed the space, retaining some of the original wood beam features to match the clients' requirements. LED down lights were installed to enhance ambiance. We refurbished the clients' existing timber doors, windows and rafters by dressing them with hardwood trims to further weatherproof the conservatory and provide a more pleasing aesthetic.

Enhanced Drainage

To match the new roof design, we upgraded and replaced the rear valley and all guttering, ensuring efficient drainage and protection against the elements.

Seamless Integration

The internal walls of the conservatory were treated and skimmed to seamlessly match the new ceilings, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing space.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

We go above and beyond on each project

We noticed the client had a love of butterflies, so we decided to add a personal touch to the extension. Our team got in touch with a traditional 3rd generation roofer to craft bespoke metal butterflies to add a unique feature to the roof. These skills are not widely available anymore, but at Quay Construction & Glazing, we go the extra mile to achieve these details.

This project is a clear demonstration of the dedication we take with each project, whether that's with the functionality, the design, or the extra touches to make these spaces unique. The client now has a modern extension, designed specifically for their property and to match their preferences.
